Pedro Halffter will open the new opera season 2016/17 at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville with the Paris version of Wagner’s Tannhäuser.
Richard Wagner had fully reworked the piece for the performance at the Paris Opera in the year 1861. According to the habits of the Parisian audience, he expands the Venusberg scene in the first act with a ballet scene (Bacchanal), which directly adjoins the shortened Overture . More major changes are the extension of the second scene of the first act (Tannhäuser Venus) and the reduction of the famous “singer war scene” in the second act.
This Tannhäuser version will be staged for the first time in Seville .

The performance dates are from 28 October to 5 November 2016
